Spooky Season is upon us…

Spooky tablescape

In this post, we talked all about how this year I am really leaning into finding Halloween decorations that are both spooky and chic, and that includes stylishly spooky tablescape decor! My favorite part of Halloween is obviously the Halloween candy- but the second best thing is the Halloween parties. Halloween is the one occasion where I feel like we have collectively agreed that more is more and it’s totally okay (and encouraged) to go all out.

But, hosting the perfect Halloween dinner party CAN still be chic and elevated. With a bit of intentional design and some creativity, you can create a creepy chic Halloween tablescape that will send chills down your guests spine (in a good way!).

Inspo/Mood Board

If you’re new around here, know that I start every tablescape with a mood board.  It is the best way to really zero in on your vision without distraction.  I love drawing inspiration from classic Halloween tropes (think black cats & jack’o’lanterns) and horror films.

Pinterest, Instagram, and Tiktok are also all gold mines for sparking your creativity if you’re feeling stuck. While I am not big on specific “themes,” Halloween is the exception.  Having a theme can help guide your decision-making and create a cohesive tablescape.

When it comes to color choices, I generally recommend starting with a neutral base and layering in the classic Halloween color palette of black, orange, and purple. Lean into deeper variations of these colors for a more elevated look (ie. burnt orange and deep purple/burgundy).

Here is an example of a spooky Halloween tablescape mood board I put together:

Essential Components of a Spooky Tablescape

When designing your spooky tablescape, you’ll need to pay attention to several essential components:

Tablecloth/Table Runner

Start by selecting a tablecloth or runner that sets the foundation for your halloween table decorations. In the mood board above, I selected a very neutral tablecloth, similar to one that I would use all year-around. But, if you look closely the pattern is made up of skulls vs. an expected floral pattern. These are the small details you can incorporate to show off your unique style while still keeping to the theme.

Plain tablecloths also work well and can be layered with lace or “creepy” cloth for a beautifully eerie touch. In the mood board below, I layered both a tablecloth with a runner down the middle of the table.

Dinnerware

My general rule of thumb when creating a seasonal or themed tablescape is to make “swaps” instead of “additions.” Basically, that means you are using things already have as a base and swapping out certain items for a seasonal version. That way, you are not creating an overly complicated tablescape and your table design will still feel like you.

For example, you could use your existing charger plates and swap your usual dinner plates for a spooky Halloween plate. Another example is swapping your usual silverware for black flatware as a subtle nod to the season.

Glassware

This is my favorite place to really get festive. Glassware is so easy to swap in and out and is generally a very inexpensive way to add an interesting element. My favorite stores to buy Halloween glassware are Crate & Barrel, cb2, and Pottery Barn. The skeleton glasses in the mood board above are simple with a classic silhouette, but still scream Halloween.

Another great place to source any Halloween decor is your local thrift store.  Shopping second-hand is a great way to save money and to score vintage pieces that already come aged to perfection.

Place Settings

I love adding personal touches to every place setting to make my guests feel special. Incorporating a printable menu or place card to your Halloween table setting is easy way to elevate your tablescape.  Rename your menu items with spookier, Halloween-themed names for a fun touch. For example, you might serve a “Witch’s brew” stew or a “Ghoul-ash.” Consider making your place cards look like tomb stones for each of your guests as an extra eerie touch.

You can accessorize your table settings with mini pumpkins, mini skulls, mini cauldrons, etc. to fit your theme and add yet another layer of interest.

Centerpieces

Spooky Tablescape Idea

To truly immerse your guests in the spooky atmosphere, it’s essential to set the mood.  With your centerpiece being the focal point of your dinner table, this is a great place to go all out.  In the mood board I created, I opted for a row of black candles spanning the entire length of the middle of the table for a dramatic, yet chic look.  You could also opt for a long candelabra with taper candles, a floral arrangement filled with moody flowers, a basket filled with spooky decor, or some combination of these elements. As always, refer back to your mood board for inspiration and guidance.

Incorporating Spooky Lighting and Candles

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. Use candles, lanterns, or even flickering LED candles to create an eerie atmosphere. Dim the lights or opt for colored bulbs to add a ghostly glow to your tablescape. Bonus points if you have a fireplace that you can fire up for a warm glow!

Bonus Tips:

Here are a few ideas outside of the tablescape that you can incorporate to add to the spooky ambiance:

  • Create a playlist of eerie music to play in the background.
  • Add spiderwebs to your chandelier..
  • Play a scary movie in the background.
  • Use a fog machine
  • Decorate your porch or entryway to set the mood the moment your guests walk in the door.
  • Send spooky invitations to get your guests excited for the event.

Creating a spooky tablescape is a fun and creative way to celebrate this spooky season. It is so much fun to really lean into the spirit of the season while still keeping the decor reflective of your personal style. With a few simple swaps, you can craft a hauntingly beautiful tablescape that will leave your guests mesmerized. So, embrace your creativity, have fun, and share your spooky tablescape creations with the world. Happy Halloween!
