The #1 killer of a dinner party: Awkward small talk.

Dinner conversation starters

The #2 killer of a dinner party: the awkward silence that follows. Okay, picture this: the dinner table is set, the aroma of delicious food is wafting through the air, and everyone’s settling in. BUT one thing is off – the room is dead silent. Everyone is awkwardly scrolling their phones silently counting down the minutes until they can come up with a polite reason to excuse themselves and make a run for the nearest exit.

NOW picture this: a dinner table where the conversation is as tantalizing as the food spread. Everyone is laughing, and talking, and no one has checked their phone once. Before you know it, the dinner is over, but everyone wants to stay to keep the good vibes goin’. Which dinner party would you rather attend?

Now, let’s debunk the myth that intentional conversations are all business and no fun. Truthfully, the best ways to connect are by sharing fun stories and your most unserious moments. Nothing brings people together like laughing about that time you accidentally sent 4 firetrucks and an ambulance to a CVS (a true story for another time).

These 110 fun conversation starters are all open-ended questions – the unsung heroes of great conversations. No more one-word answers; we’re after stories, adventures, and thoughts that make you go, “I never thought about it that way!” They’re intended to create a space for meaningful conversations, deep belly-laughs, and connection on a deeper level.  And remember, it’s not about putting anyone on the spot – it’s about making the dinner table a place where everyone’s a storyteller.

At the end of this post, you’ll find a FREE printable PDF of all of the following questions to print out and use over and over again.  Have some good conversation starters of your own? Feel free to add your own questions to the pot with the blank squares included in your PDF – and while you’re at it, drop them in the comments so we can all enjoy!

If you want to incorporate more meaningful conversation into your daily life, and not just on special occasions, I recommend doing a daily “peak” and “pit” with your loved ones. This was my favorite family activity at dinner time where we would go around the table and you would share the best part of your day (the peak) and the hardest part of your day (the pit). This is a simple activity the whole family can enjoy (at any age group!) and a great way to connect every single day.
